Pizza and Presecco Evening at Ruskin House

Jul 2019

Following on from the success of last year’s Pizza and Prosecco, we are pleased to be hosting another Pizza and Prosecco evening at Ruskin House on Saturday 20th July from 7pm. We are delighted to have Croydon’s first female MP, Sarah Jones, speaking at the event. A ticket includes a glass of prosecco on arrival and homemade pizzas with vegan and gluten-free pizzas available! In fact all the prosecco served at the event is vegan! After your first glass of prosecco, you can buy a glass of prosecco for the bargain price of £3 a glass. Prosecco cocktails will also be available along with desserts.

All money raised from the event will fund the ongoing restoration and creation of the new library/meeting room at Ruskin House. The room is to be named after Georgina King Lewis, who donated the first Ruskin House to enable trade unionists to have a place to meet. This room is a small tribute to female trade unionists past and present who often go unrecognised. The room has undergone a huge amount of work on a shoestring budget, with hours of work being put in by volunteers. We still have more work to do on the room and this event will help to raise vital funds to ensure that work carries on. Looking forward to seeing you!

Tolpuddle Festival Coach Sunday 21st July 2019

Jul 2019

Coach leaves Ruskin House at 8am on Sunday 21st July and is normally back at Ruskin House by 9.30pm. To reserve a seat at a cost of £8 contact Roy Aird on mobile 07941 890756.

Tolpuddle has been a place of great importance to the Labour Movement from the moment news broke of the harsh sentences imposed on the six farm workers from Dorset which led to the early inception of trade unions to support and protect worker’s rights.

The Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival is now a celebration of those brave six farm labourers who endured harsh punishments at the hands of the establishment. Today the festival offers live music, local food, trade stalls, comedy and political debate.

Each year the event sees thousands visit the festival with the grand procession through the village being the highlight. The procession sees unions and trade groups from across the country march in solidarity while displaying their banners proudly.

A short drive from the village of Tolpuddle is Dorchester, home of the Shire Hall where the Tolpuddle Martyrs were tried. The Shire Hall is now open as a museum and visitor centre giving visitors the chance to see the restored courtroom and
